2014 -- Flicks

Been trying to keep up with my movies as well, and figured now is as good a time as any to post 'em as I see 'em...

January 2014

*** American Hustle -- Too long, more confusing than necessary, definitely not *The Grifters*, but Jennifer Hudson's character and the scene with the microwave is hilarious :)

***** Lone Survivor -- Perfectly incredible: amazing cinematography, nothing extemporaneous in the writing, riveting acting, devastatingly tragic...Incredible experience. My heart goes out to the men and women and their families who make such an immeasurable sacrifice...

****  Gone, Baby, Gone --  Had to see this since I liked the book so much; Affleck does a good job and the changes from the text work (though, man, I really wanted to see Cheese as a white dude in prison!). My take away wouldn't be nearly as deep if I hadn't read the book, though. But I really liked it.

****  Captain Phillips -- Really enjoyed this film (despite the fact my car was towed while I was watching it...). I remember the story all over the news and knew from the movie buzz that many of the actors were Somalis, so I was intrigued and interested from the start and not disappointed at all. The luck of one's birthplace is a tragic reality and this film is a strong reminder of that fact.

February 2014

**** The Fighter -- This turned out to be a re-watch because I felt like seeing it again after a long time...Still a wonderful film: powerful, personal, poignant, painful. Mark Wahlberg was fabulous and that mother...ohmygoodness. She was one of my favorite actresses from 'Homicide: Life on the Streets' back in the day and she is phenomenal. Good way to spend an ice day :)

March 2014

*****  Dallas Buyers Club  -- Holy freaking amazing: script, acting. McConaughey and Leto were phenomenal. I am so thankful true stories like this find their way to the world. That judge saying how the laws aren't always just, but they were the laws...How can people move through the world when they make decisions for others' lives without using their heart? A heroic, tragic, painful story.

April 2014

****  The Descendants

July 2014

****  The Grand Budapest Hotel

August 2014

****Divergent
****The Other Woman
****Frozen
